For an amount of 123 yuan, the financial wording is 壹佰贰拾叁元整. The ending identifies both the currency unit and the absence of a fractional amount. Writing only 壹佰贰拾叁 expresses the number without completing the money amount.
Chinese financial numerals use more complex forms than everyday number writing. They help distinguish an amount from easily altered strokes, but the text still needs to match the Arabic-digit amount on the same document.
The digits and currency units
| Digits | Financial forms |
|---|---|
0 1 2 3 4 | 零 壹 贰 叁 肆 |
5 6 7 8 9 | 伍 陆 柒 捌 玖 |
10 100 1,000 | 拾 佰 仟 |
元 is the yuan unit, 角 is one tenth of a yuan, and 分 is one hundredth. In 123.45, the decimal places represent four jiao and five fen. They are not read as an ordinary decimal followed by the word yuan.
Four useful patterns
| Amount in yuan | Wording |
|---|---|
123.00 | 壹佰贰拾叁元整 |
123.40 | 壹佰贰拾叁元肆角整 |
123.45 | 壹佰贰拾叁元肆角伍分 |
100.05 | 壹佰元零伍分 |
After a whole-yuan amount, 整 indicates that no jiao or fen follows. After an amount ending in jiao, it can be included; after a stated fen amount, do not append it. The character 正 is also used for whole amounts in payment-document conventions. Follow the currency-prefix instructions printed on the actual form.
Use zero to bridge a gap
In 100.05, there are no jiao between the yuan amount and five fen. The 零 in 壹佰元零伍分 makes that gap clear. Within the integer part, several consecutive zero digits do not require a separate 零 for every empty position.
Compare 1001.05, written 壹仟零壹元零伍分, with 1010.50, written 壹仟零壹拾元伍角整. These examples show two different roles for zero: an empty place inside the whole amount and a missing jiao place.
Distinguish cents from decimal digits
The amount 0.50 yuan is five jiao, while 0.05 yuan is five fen. The same visible digit occupies a different place. Read the complete amount before converting it, especially when copying from a narrow spreadsheet column or a scan with a faint decimal point.
For amounts above one yuan, compare 108.50 and 108.05. The first is 壹佰零捌元伍角整; the second is 壹佰零捌元零伍分. They share the same whole-yuan portion, but the latter needs a zero before fen because there are no jiao. Copying the first result and merely replacing its final character would not produce the second amount correctly.
Adding zeros to the right of a decimal does not change its value: 123.4 and 123.40 are the same amount. Removing a zero between the decimal point and a non-zero digit does change the value: 123.04 and 123.4 differ by 0.36 yuan. Treat this as a value check, not a typography preference.
Prepare one agreed amount
A conversion should start from the amount that the parties have already agreed to put on the document. If a quotation includes several lines, discounts or delivery charges, resolve those calculations first. Converting the product subtotal when the numeric field contains the final payable total would create two different amounts on the same document even if both conversions were individually correct.
Consider a made-up order with goods costing 120.00 yuan, a 10.00-yuan discount and 8.50 yuan for delivery. The final total is 118.50 yuan, written 壹佰壹拾捌元伍角整. The delivery charge is part of this example because the agreed total includes it; it is not a universal instruction to add delivery to every amount field.
If the source is in dollars or another currency, do not just append 元 to its digits and call it an RMB amount. Confirm whether conversion into yuan is actually required, then agree the exchange calculation separately. Financial-numeral conversion describes an existing yuan amount; it does not establish an exchange rate.
Read the completed result alongside the numeric field from left to right, including the currency prefix, the whole amount, jiao and fen. While preparing a draft, regenerate the words whenever the agreed total changes instead of patching a long character string by hand. Do not treat this as permission to alter an issued payment instrument. An unchanged words field beside a revised numeric total is a mismatch that a correct converter cannot resolve on its own.
Check the amount before copying it
Enter yuan with no more than two decimal places in the RMB amount converter. If a calculation produces more digits, decide the rounding rule before conversion. For example, converting a rounded total and rounding each line of an invoice separately can produce different totals.
The converter includes the prefix 人民币. On payment instruments and settlement vouchers, that prefix belongs before the amount; if it is already printed on the form, do not duplicate it. Check the institution's form requirements as well as the wording. Conversion checks an amount's representation; it does not validate the underlying transaction or complete the other required fields.
