A listing that says 3.5万 describes 35,000, while 3.5亿 describes 350,000,000. The decimal part is the same; the unit makes the values ten thousand times different. Before copying a Chinese amount into a budget or spreadsheet, identify both parts.
Chinese large numbers are commonly grouped around powers of ten thousand. English quantity labels such as thousand, million and billion usually advance in groups of three digits. Commas in a printed number do not change its value, but moving between these naming systems takes more than translating the unit word.
The two units that matter most
| Chinese unit | Value | Example |
|---|---|---|
万 | 10,000 | 12万 = 120,000 |
亿 | 100,000,000 | 1.2亿 = 120,000,000 |
万亿 | 1,000,000,000,000 | 2万亿 = 2,000,000,000,000 |
One million is 100万, and one billion in modern English financial reporting is 10亿. If a translated report uses a word such as billion, confirm the numerical value and the language convention rather than assuming similar-looking unit names always agree.
Convert before comparing
Suppose two suppliers list annual output as 800万 units and 0.12亿 units. Convert both to ordinary digits: the first is 8,000,000, and the second is 12,000,000. The second figure is larger even though its visible decimal number looks smaller.
For a spreadsheet, store the full numeric value in one column and the measurement or currency in another. A cell containing only 3.5 is not a faithful copy of 3.5万件. The missing multiplier changes the quantity; the missing unit also hides that the number refers to items.
Zeros and decimal places carry information
一万零五 means 10,005. 一万五千 means 15,000. The spoken shortcut 一万五 can depend on context, so replace it with a fully written amount before using it in an order or agreement.
A decimal in front of a unit multiplies the entire value: 0.08万 = 800 and 1.25亿 = 125,000,000. First expand the amount, then apply any rounding required by the task. Do not round away decimal places simply because the original amount was expressed in a large unit.
Read the column heading first
Sometimes the multiplier is printed once above a whole table rather than beside each entry. A heading such as 金额(万元) means that the amounts in that column are expressed in ten-thousand-yuan units. A row containing 36.8 therefore represents 368,000 yuan. Copying just the cell into another document loses the scale stated in the heading.
Check both the column and any note applying to the whole table. A second table in the same report may switch from yuan to ten thousand yuan or from individual items to ten thousand items. Treat each table as a separate reading task. A familiar layout does not establish that its units match the previous page.
For an illustrative budget, suppose three entries under a ten-thousand-yuan heading are 12, 3.6 and 0.48. Their total is 16.08 in the table's units, or 160,800 yuan. You can add the entries first and then multiply by 10,000, or convert each entry before adding. Both methods give the same result if you keep one consistent unit.
Check a conversion backwards
A simple reverse check catches many missing-zero errors. After expanding 2.35亿 to 235,000,000, divide the result by 100,000,000. You should recover 2.35. If you recover 23.5 or 0.235, the copied number is off by a factor of ten.
When writing the same value in English millions, divide the full amount by 1,000,000: 235,000,000 becomes 235 million. Conversely, 2.35 million is 235万, not 2.35亿. Keeping the full numeric value between the two descriptions makes the change of grouping easier to audit.
Preserve what the original number measures. 3万元, 3万美元 and 3万件 all contain the same multiplier, but refer to yuan, US dollars and items respectively. A number conversion does not perform a currency exchange or change the quantity being measured. If an exchange calculation is also needed, keep its exchange rate and date separate.
Finally, keep the precision of the original claim visible. A figure stated as approximately 1.2亿 should not be presented as an exact measured count of 120,000,000 merely because it has been expanded. The conversion is exact; the source figure may still be rounded or approximate.
Keep number reading separate from money wording
123 can be read as 一百二十三. A formal RMB amount adds financial numerals and currency units: 壹佰贰拾叁元整. A quantity of products does not become yuan merely because it uses Chinese characters.
Use the Chinese number converter to compare units or read a full number. When the task specifically requires an amount in yuan, use RMB amounts in words and check the decimal amount alongside the result.
