Chinese address codes and administrative divisions

Chinese address codes and administrative divisions
On this page

朝阳区 is not enough to identify one Chinese address. The 2025 dataset contains a Chaoyang District in Beijing, code 110105, and another in Changchun, Jilin, code 220104. Copying the first matching district name into a delivery form can therefore select the wrong place even when every Chinese character looks correct.

Start with the original Chinese address, its province or municipality, the relevant city where there is one, and the year of the record. Then check the administrative code against that context. A code lookup helps identify an administrative unit; it does not supply the street, building, recipient or postal routing needed to deliver something there.

Distinguish three kinds of code

A six-digit administrative division code and a six-digit postcode are different systems. A field labelled 行政区划代码 asks for an administrative identifier. 邮政编码 asks for postal information. Similar length does not make them interchangeable, and there is no safe rule that turns a district code into the recipient’s postcode. Confirm a mailing postcode separately with the recipient or the relevant postal service.

Statistical division codes are another distinction. The national statistical coding structure uses twelve digits for divisions, extending the provincial, prefectural and county segments with township and village segments. A twelve-digit code found in a statistics table is not simply a longer postal code. Check the field’s definition before shortening it, padding it or copying it into a six-digit field.

The ChinaClue dataset discussed here covers provincial, prefectural and county-level records within its declared 1981–2025 range. It is not a township, village or house-number directory. That boundary matters when a form has additional street-office or community selections: a successful county lookup does not fill those remaining fields.

Read the address hierarchy

Chinese administrative names carry useful type markers. 省 indicates a province; 市 can appear at different administrative levels; 区 and 县 commonly identify district- or county-level units. Do not assign a level merely by translating the last character. Read the hierarchy stored with the record, particularly when a city name appears inside a larger city or prefecture.

Municipalities also make a rigid “province, city, district” template misleading. In this dataset, 北京市 is provincial-level and 东城区 sits beneath it without a separate prefecture name. The blank prefecture field is not an invitation to invent a city or repeat a name as if it were another administrative unit. Follow the receiving form’s municipality handling when entering the address.

The six-digit identifier is structured rather than a street coordinate: the first two digits identify the provincial segment, the next two the prefectural segment and the last two the county segment. However, reconstructing parents by replacing digits with zeros is less reliable than using the dataset’s explicit hierarchy. Keep the original Chinese names alongside any translated display labels.

Resolve identical names with context

For 朝阳区, compare the complete paths before selecting a result. The Beijing record belongs to 北京市 and uses 110105. The Changchun record belongs to 吉林省 → 长春市 and uses 220104. The matching district name alone does not distinguish them, while the province and city normally provide the missing context.

Two districts named 朝阳区: 北京市 uses 110105; 吉林省 → 长春市 uses 220104.

If the supplied address only says 朝阳区 followed by a street, ask for the missing higher-level information rather than guessing from a familiar city. A recognisable landmark can help a recipient explain the address, but it is not a replacement for the administrative fields required by a form. Preserve the supplied address while you resolve the ambiguity.

Localized names are useful for finding and reading results, especially when you know a place as Beijing rather than 北京市. They do not replace the Chinese original for a recipient who needs it, and they are not certified transliterations for every document. Keep a separate editable mailing line if the carrier asks for Latin letters.

Choose the year before matching

Administrative records can change names, boundaries or identifiers over time. Searching a historical record only against a recent snapshot can make a valid old name look missing. Select the year that the record is meant to describe. If its date is unknown, keep that uncertainty visible instead of assigning the current year by default.

The downloadable snapshot contains 6,824 historical records and 3,212 entries active in 2025. Its start year is included; its end year is excluded. A row with start 1981 and end 2010 is included for 2009 but not for 2010. An empty end means that this source snapshot records no ending, not that the unit is guaranteed unchanged in 2026 or later.

For example, 110103 崇文区 is included in the dataset for 2009 and excluded for 2010, with a successor link to 110101 in 2010. This is a year-based data relationship. It does not identify the exact day a change took effect, certify an old document, or mean that every detail of the old address can be replaced mechanically with the successor’s name.

Keep historical records when joining files

When combining a spreadsheet with the code files, first decide whether you need one chosen year or the full history. Filtering to the intended year before matching avoids attaching several historical rows to one current record. For historical work, retain the code, Chinese name and validity interval together; a code alone is not a unique historical row.

Import code columns as text and retain all six characters. Keep the original source column beside your matched result so that corrections remain traceable. A failed match should remain unresolved until you check the year, hierarchy and spelling. Deleting unmatched rows or selecting the first result makes the file look cleaner while hiding precisely the records that need attention.

The accompanying download includes the full historical CSV, the 2025 snapshot, successor relationships and the unchanged source JSON. Its translated labels and field guide support analysis, while the original names and fixed version preserve what was actually matched. Use the region lookup to investigate a record, then the Chinese address tool to arrange the confirmed mailing details.
