A message saying 十一月十三号下午两点半 refers to 14:30 on 13 November, but it still leaves the year and time zone unstated. That may be enough between people discussing tomorrow in the same city. It is not enough to transfer a booking into an international calendar without checking the missing information.
Separate three tasks: read the Chinese expression, identify the calendar date and clock time, and establish the time zone. The characters tell you how the date is expressed; they do not by themselves tell you whether the writer means Beijing time or your own local time. Keep the original message until the appointment is confirmed. This is especially useful when a hotel sends a Chinese pickup message and you later enter the details into a calendar displayed in another language. A translation can make the sentence readable without supplying the missing booking facts.
Read the date from large to small
A complete Chinese date normally places the year before the month and day. In 2026年11月13日, 年 follows the year, 月 the month and 日 the day. The corresponding numeric date is 2026-11-13. Avoid rearranging 11 and 13 according to the date order used in your own country.
Read the year digit by digit: 二〇二六年, rather than as a quantity of two thousand and twenty-six. Month and day use ordinary number expressions: 十一月 and 十三日. The zero in a year may be written 〇 or 零; this difference does not change the year. February is 二月, not 两月.
日 is common in written dates; 号 is common in conversation. 十一月十三号 and 十一月十三日 can identify the same day. In this context 号 is the day number, but elsewhere it may be part of an address or another number label. Read it with the surrounding month and the purpose of the message.
Keep clock time unambiguous
点 marks the hour in everyday speech and 分 marks minutes. 下午两点三十分 and 下午两点半 both describe 14:30. 两点 is the usual expression for two o’clock, unlike 二月 for February. Learning the complete phrases avoids applying one version of “two” mechanically everywhere.
一刻 is a quarter of an hour and 半 is half an hour in these clock expressions. 上午九点一刻 is 09:15, and 上午十一点半 is 11:30. For a written appointment, a numeric 24-hour time is a useful companion to the Chinese phrase because it keeps the morning or afternoon distinction visible.
Small minute values need attention: 上午七点零五分 is 07:05, not 07:50. Compare 五分 with 五十分 before copying a time. Noon is 12:00; the beginning of a new day is 00:00. If a message uses “twelve at night” without a clear date, ask the sender to confirm the exact date and numeric time.
Do not add twelve to every clock value that sounds like an afternoon expression. The conversion depends on the hour: 2 pm is 14:00, while noon remains 12:00. When preserving a formal time such as 14:30 in a form, enter the number the form expects instead of replacing it with a conversational phrase.
Crossing midnight changes the date

Consider two original travel notes: 2026年11月13日晚上十一点五十分 and 2026年11月14日零点十分. They correspond to 2026-11-13 23:50 and 2026-11-14 00:10. If both use the same time zone, the second is twenty minutes later, even though its clock number is smaller.
Copying only 00:10 into the first note’s date would place the event almost a day earlier. Write year, month, day and time together when a train arrival, pickup or check-in crosses midnight. If different time zones are involved, convert the full date and time rather than comparing the two clock faces.
For an appointment confirmed as Beijing time, label it Asia/Shanghai or explicitly 北京时间 before converting it for another city. The date at the destination can differ. Changing the language of a calendar interface is not a time-zone conversion, and a date written in Chinese characters does not automatically indicate the lunar calendar.
Check the day and calendar
星期一 through 星期六 name Monday through Saturday; 星期日 and 星期天 can name Sunday. The weekday is not the day of the month. For example, 2026年11月2日星期一 combines the date 2026-11-02 with Monday. If a message’s date and weekday disagree, confirm which one the sender intended.
Also validate that the date exists. 2000-02-29 and 2024-02-29 are valid Gregorian dates; 2026-02-29 is not. Chinese wording does not make an invalid date valid. If the message explicitly mentions 农历 or a leap lunar month, use the lunar conversion tool and retain the calendar and year when recording the result.
A weekday label does not establish whether a date is a working day in mainland China. Public holidays and adjusted working weekends require the relevant year’s calendar. Keep the language-reading task separate from that scheduling check, especially when arranging an office visit, delivery or supplier response deadline.
Record a confirmed appointment
Keep one complete record with the original Chinese wording, full numeric date, 24-hour time, named time zone and the event being arranged. For the opening example, only add 2026 and Beijing time after they have been confirmed. Preserve any uncertainty as a question to resolve rather than filling it from today’s date.
Use the date-and-time cards to practise reading before editing a real booking. The set contains eight dates, eight times and eight combined examples, with separate answers. Check your numeric answer first, then its spoken form. The meeting planner handles time-zone conversion, while the workday calendar checks the separate question of working-day status.
